What is BBL?
The name of this procedure is slightly deceptive because it is not an actual butt lift. Its namesake is attributed to Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, a Brazilian plastic surgeon believed to have pioneered the procedure in the 1960s.
A BBL is an autologous fat grafting surgical procedure that involves removing fat from other areas of the patient’s body and injecting it into the buttocks. A BBL is different from other gluteal augmentation procedures, such as a butt lift or butt implants.

How Is a BBL Performed?
The Consultation
The first step in any BBL journey is the consultation. During your consultation, your surgeon will examine the treatment area, and together you will discuss:
- Your medical history
- Your aesthetic goals and concerns
- Your questions about the procedure, recovery, and results
- Other procedures you can combine with your BBL
If you and Dr. Bedolla agree that the procedure is appropriate and decide to proceed, he will create a surgical plan with details about your customized procedure. He will also provide you with instructions on how to prepare for a BBL. Preparation may include medical testing, lifestyle changes (like quitting smoking), and arranging for someone you trust to drive you home.
The Procedure
A general overview of a BBL is as follows:
- Anesthesia: For your comfort, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia will be administered.
- Liposuction: A thin tube, or cannula, is inserted into small incisions made in the donor location. Dr. Bedolla will carefully sculpt this area as he removes fat to leave a smooth contour. Fat is suctioned out through the cannula into a machine that cleanses and processes the fat to prepare it for injection.
- Fat injection: Syringes are attached to a special cannula, which is then used to add fat to the buttocks via small injections distributed evenly until the ideal result is achieved.
What Is BBL Recovery Like?
After your surgery is complete, you will be moved to a recovery area for monitoring until you are ready to be discharged home with a responsible driver.
Our office will provide you with detailed instructions for recovery. For optimal results, these instructions should be followed carefully, and all follow-up visits should be maintained.
A compression garment is essential for your BBL recovery. They help reduce swelling, promote better circulation and skin elasticity, and they truly make a difference for stunning results.
You will need to avoid putting pressure on your buttocks for up to one month, which means resting and sleeping on your stomach. This allows for proper blood flow to the newly transferred fat. Special pillows and cushions can help keep you comfortable during this period.
Many patients can return to work within 7-10 days of surgery, depending on the nature of their job duties. Exercise should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Bedolla.
What Results Can I Expect From BBL Surgery?
Results will be visible almost immediately, although they may be much more dramatic than your final results. This is because your body may resorb and eliminate some of the grafted fat cells. To compensate for this, we often overfull the buttocks, but you should still expect some reduction in size in the months following your procedure.
Within the first 3-6 months, the affected tissues will slowly settle, and your final look will gradually appear. Many patients grow increasingly satisfied over this period of time as they adjust to their shapely new silhouette.
The results from a BBL can last for decades. It is highly recommended to maintain a stable weight within 10 pounds of your weight at the time of surgery. Fat gain and fat loss are processes that are unique to each individual, so the way they can affect the results of your BBL is unpredictable.
